ABS/ASA enclosure troubleshooting
ABS & ASA Enclosures: Warping, Layer Cracks & Fit
A housing that lifts at a corner, a wall that cracks between layers and a lid that will not close are different problems. Diagnose when the defect appears before changing a profile. This WJ guide covers separate ABS and ASA grades, not an ABS/ASA blend, and turns those symptoms into a controlled sample and assembly review.
Quick answer for buyers
For WJ ABS or ASA enclosure approval, identify the exact grade and record when the defect begins. Review first-layer contact, thermal conditions, extrusion and part geometry separately; then measure the cooled housing, holes and lid fit against the drawing. WJ publishes grade-specific starting references, not a universal profile or finished-part guarantee. Keep the sample, profile and acceptance record together; this guide reports no new WJ enclosure tests.
1. Start with the failure stage
Save a photograph and the layer or time at which the defect first appears. Distinguish lines that never attach, a sound base that lifts later, a wall that splits during printing, and damage that appears only after tightening fasteners. These observations guide the next check; they do not establish a root cause by themselves.
| Symptom / timing | Check next | Record the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| First lines do not attach | Plate preparation, leveling and first-layer setup | Surface, profile and first-layer photograph |
| Corners lift after a sound base | Drafts, thermal stability, footprint and restraint | Layer/time, location and baseline trial |
| Wall splits during the print | Layer interface, feed continuity, conditioning and cooling | Crack location, profile and adjacent-road appearance |
| Bottom edge too wide | First-layer expansion versus whole-part dimensions | Bottom and upper measurements after cooling |
| Holes or lid do not align | Drawing, orientation, distortion and finishing | Hole centers, diameters, lid engagement and drawing revision |
| Crack appears during fastening | Boss geometry, alignment and fastening procedure | Before/after assembly and specified installation method |
2. Start from the exact WJ grade
WJ ABS and ASA references are V1.0, issued August 1, 2026. The ranges below are starting guidance from those documents, not a verified enclosure recipe. Confirm the current TDS, color and lot, printer temperature limits, approved build surface, conditioning and enclosure arrangements. Do not transfer another supplier’s ABS/ASA blend profile or assume ASA-CF uses the unfilled ASA profile. A processing temperature is not a service-temperature rating.
| WJ document starting guidance | ABS | ASA |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature · °C | 230–250 | 240–260 |
| Bed temperature · °C | 80–100 | 90–100 |
3. Investigate corner lift
If the first lines fail to attach, check plate preparation, leveling and first-layer setup according to the equipment instructions. If a good base lifts later, investigate drafts, changing thermal conditions and the footprint or wall layout. Use only a printer-approved enclosure and its ventilation instructions. Compare any brim or geometry change as a separate trial and check removal and final dimensions; extra adhesion alone does not identify the cause.
4. Separate layer cracks from missing extrusion
Inspect whether the split follows layer boundaries and whether adjacent roads are complete. Record cooling, nozzle/profile settings, material conditioning and feed continuity. Under-extrusion, contamination, geometry and assembly stress also deserve inspection. Change one supported variable at a time. Part-cooling settings and the hotend heatsink fan have different jobs: follow the printer instructions and do not disable the heatsink fan to change part cooling. A photograph alone does not establish bond strength.
5. Measure before forcing the assembly
Let the part cool using the approved process, then record the measurement time and temperature. Check base flatness, overall dimensions, hole centers and diameters, boss condition, lid engagement and the drawing’s tolerances. Compare parts before and after support removal or finishing. A tight lower edge may be first-layer expansion rather than whole-part shrinkage. If cracks appear only after screws are installed, inspect hole alignment, boss design and the specified fastening procedure before changing print temperature. Do not force a lid or apply a universal clearance or shrinkage percentage.
6. Use a representative trial
Print a small section containing the actual corner, wall transition, boss and lid feature before committing to a complete housing. Keep a full-size sample for the final fit check: a small coupon cannot establish the thermal behavior of a broad base. Save a baseline profile and change one factor per trial; record linked changes when unavoidable. Use the intended orientation, wall layout and finishing process, and retain unsuccessful trials as well as the selected sample.
7. Record sample acceptance
Agree pass/fail criteria before testing. Use the worksheet below for photographs, measured values, process revision, result and reviewer. Repeat the relevant assembly sequence and application checks, rather than accepting only the best photograph. Exterior appearance, mechanical function and environmental suitability are separate approval items. Leave untested requirements pending.
| Acceptance item | Record and agreed criteria |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Cooled flatness, overall dimensions, hole locations/diameters and drawing tolerances |
| Layers and surface | Cracks, missing extrusion, support damage and agreed visual reference |
| Assembly | Lid fit, fasteners, boss condition and the actual assembly sequence |
| Process | Exact grade/color/lot, machine/nozzle, profile, conditioning and finishing |
| Approval and change | Pass/fail/pending, reviewer/date, retained sample and re-test triggers |
8. Link troubleshooting to the order specification
Send WJ the grade/SKU, color reference, drawing revision, machine/nozzle, profile, conditioning and finishing process with the physical approval sample or agreed reference. Specify the observed failure and required acceptance evidence. Recheck affected items when grade, color, geometry, machine or process changes. The existing WJ heat-resistant filament guide helps with material screening; outdoor life, sealing, electrical use and loaded heat performance need their own evidence. No new yield, strength, dimensional accuracy or compatibility result is claimed here.
